| A Formula for Lasting Change
|
Jayne
Felgen has developed a formula for change which defines four
equal elements for transforming an environment of care. This
formula serves as a conceptual pattern to simplify the process
of engaging individuals and groups in appreciating current successes
while aspiring to higher levels of achievement and deeper integration
of the change within the culture of the organization.
I2E2 is often
used to map out a full-scale Relationship-Based
Care implementation. A gantt chart showing an RBC implementation
over three years is available here. |
| Inspiration |
Inspiration creates momentum and movement. To inspire means to "draw forth or bring out." People come forward when they believe that what they have to offer is valued and that they are contributing to a vision that is compelling and life-giving. Leaders inspire others when they have clarity of vision and purpose, confidence and ability to influence others to share their vision, and a laser focus on what matters most: caring and healing relationships at the point of care.
All members of an organization become inspired when they see this common sense approach to fulfilling the purpose and mission of the organization and, perhaps their own personal call to their profession. This inspired vision and purposefulness results in an organizational culture in which people are seen as individuals who are valued and respected, recruitment and retention is strong and morale is high. |
| Infrastructure |
Infrastructure organizes the way in which the vision is achieved. It provides the underlying foundation for change to happen. The infrastructure includes a horizontal and vertical plan for involving all stakeholders in a meaningful way. An effective infrastructure is designed to integrate changes into roles and relationships, operating principles and practices, communication processes, decision-making structures, and tools and systems to support the work. The infrastructure must support the vision and desired results. Successful integration is the antidote to the "flavor of the month" initiatives that so often drain our enthusiasm for change. |
| Education |
Education promotes competence, confidence and personal commitment. Education is informed by the belief that people want to do a good job and, further, when they are encouraged and supported to learn and develop to their greatest capacity, they are more creative, productive, and satisfied with their work. Priority areas for development are self-awareness, patient and family experience of care, developing and maintaining healthy relationships, proactive and positive communication, creative/critical thinking, and leadership.

| Evidence |
| Evidence demonstrates that something has, indeed, happened or changed. Evidence of success lets people know that all their work is paying off and that progress, or growth is happening. Evidence links directly back to inspiration - as there is nothing more inspiring than seeing the fruits of our labor! Clearly defined measures based on the vision and goals of the desired change are articulated and evaluated to benchmark success. |
