Summoning the Sage Within: Summit of Sages Pre-conference

Creative Health Care Management's Pre-conference was an amazing success! Marie Manthey and Kristen Swanson provided inspiring keynote speeches. We thank our panel presenters for sharing their wisdom, and all attendees for sharing their innovations in Relationship-Based Care. What a gift it was to be able to learn from each other in such a beautiful and comfortable setting!

More than 100 people from across the United States and around the world – including Iceland and Brazil – came to St. Paul, Minnesota this year for the Summit of Sages. Chief nursing officers to staff nurses told each other stories of successful patient care. Academics and parishioners shared their experiences in the field. Nursing veterans and student nurses described their visions of nursing and social justice to each other. We all shared our Moments of Excellence. We were able to honor the excellence of two specific people with awards. Beth Ware, Director of Patient Care, Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital (Florence, AL) received the CHCM National Mentoring Award. The recipient of the 2007 Marie Manthey Award for Primary Nursing was Cathy Hennessey, NICU staff nurse, from the Fairview University Medical Center (Minneapolis, MN).

We were blessed to have Cheryl Kartes share her artistic talents as well. She did a marvelous job capturing conversations – moving from table to table to capture everyone’s vision – and using it to create a beautiful artist’s rendering of the event. Summit of Sages Main Conference
The Summit of Sages, An Extraordinary Event for Leaders, hosted by the University of Minnesota School of Nursing and The Densford Center for Nursing Leadership, was an inspiring three-day event. Five sages from health care or related fields spoke passionately to the theme of Social Justice. John Howe III, President and CEO of Project Hope, and Jean Watson, founder of the Center for Human Caring, were keynote speakers. The themes and speakers inspired participants as they engaged in passionate dialogue about action steps toward achieving social justice.

One of the highlights of the event was undoubtedly the hour spent Sunday evening with Maya Angelou. Marie Manthey has captured the magic of that evening on her blog. Please see what she has to say and leave a comment and let us all know what you thought.

The ninety voice Twin Cities Women's choir entertained attendees, following a lovely banquet sponsored by CHCM on Monday evening. A perfect way to wrap up three long conference days, the choir provided vocal stylings ranging from classic choir tunes to renditions of entertaining and lively contemporary pieces. It was a shining example of togetherness. Pitch perfect, never missing a cue, and precise even in the complex fugues, they showed us what determination and hard work can do. A point to remember: no auditions are required to participate in the choir, just a willingness to learn and be a productive member of the choir. We were honored to have them be a part of the conference.

And last (but certainly not least) we were thrilled to see our excitement over the long anticipated release of the Relationship-Based Care Field Guide shared by all of you. This collection of visions, strategies, tools and exemplars has been nearly three years in the making and draws on the wisdom and experience of over 50 people committed to transforming health care. It was an instant hit at the Summit of Sages, and has been a steady seller in the weeks since. It is an amazing book and a vital companion to Relationship-Based Care: A Model for Transforming Practice, the original RBC text and national best seller.
