Susan Wessel, Consultant

Areas of Expertise

Susan partners with hospitals to improve patient care through the design and implementation of Relationship-Based Care. She develops leadership teams to build trust, collaboration and personal accountability. She also specializes in creating an engaged workforce and building professional practice environments consistent with Magnet® Recognition criteria.

Susan is especially skilled in developing the leadership skills of front-line staff in support services, nursing, and ancillary departments and in helping to re-energize them. She empowers staff councils to improve their work processes by building upon their strengths and using their creativity.

It's no surprise that Susan is at home with front line staff, physicians and executive teams; she's worked closely with all of these groups throughout her career, and it's given her a system-wide view of health care. She believes it's essential to involve every level of the organization in transformational change. She helps everyone become more focused and intentional about bringing their own contribution to compassionate, quality care for patients and their loved ones.

Susan earned her BSN and MS degrees in Nursing Science from the University of Illinois, and her MBA magna cum laude from Xavier University. She has served many roles from staff nurse, to vice president of patient care, to faculty, and now works to improve health care world-wide with Creative Health Care Management.

Susan is co-editor of the Relationship-Based Care Field Guide, published in 2007 by Creative Health Care Management. She serves as a course leader for the Relationship- Based Care Leader Practicum and for Leadership at the Point of Care. She and her husband live in a suburb of Chicago.
