Areas of Expertise
Saying Marie has seen it all might be both literally true and an understatement. The
founder and president emeritus of CHCM, Marie has been a nurse since, she says,
"practically age five." And through that time, she's been motivated by the same burning
passion: focus on the nurse-patient relationship, and its potential for healing. She makes
it sound simple when she explains just how critical that relationship is: "You have to see
what supports that relationship and what interferes with that relationship, then enhance
what helps, minimize what hurts."
Marie has always been able to bridge the world of ideas and the real world of patient care
in health care workplaces. She earned her BSN and MS in Nursing Administration from
the University of Minnesota, where she remains adjunct faculty. She's taught thousands of
nurses in seminars and workshops throughout the world. But all the while, Marie has
remained grounded through her fundamental focus on patient care, whether as a staff
nurse or VP in a hospital, or when founding and building CHCM—she's always been a
health care professional. Her academic background makes her comfortable working with
theories, but her great strength is her capacity to bring new ideas into reality in a way that
is universally applicable. She has spent her career outlining and explaining primary
nursing practices, and developing processes that help nurses excel and grow.
What started in one unit at the University of Minnesota is now recognized and sought
after world-wide. Marie's ability to describe key nursing practices in universal terms and
her tireless efforts have helped countless organizations implement her practices through
transformational change and inspirational leadership. But she's always maintained her
contact with caregivers. Regardless of the scope of her experience, Marie can speak about
nursing in a way that staff nurses can identify with—they get her, and she gets them, and
when Marie uses inspirational language, they accept it and feel inspired, their own
passion for the work re-kindled, their flames burning as bright as Marie's.
Marie lives in Minneapolis, and though she feels she's entered a more reflective stage of
her career, her colleagues and clients seek her counsel every day.
