Areas of Expertise
"Health care," says Mourine, "has to be different than it's been in the past." And she and
her colleagues at CHCM fully intend to lead that necessary transformation. Mourine is
particularly focused on inspiring caregivers to reach higher levels of achievement
through—well, not so much education, but learning. "The ultimate outcome is the
learning," she says. She imparts this learning by teaching people tangible, practical skills,
and her uncanny ability to be simultaneously brilliant and simple ensures that
participants quickly grasp concepts and immediately apply them to their work.
Learning is something Mourine knows a lot about—she has a BSN from the University of
the District of Columbia and an MS in health care administration from the University of
Maryland. She's also a doctoral candidate in educational leadership and transformational
learning in health care organizations at the University of Phoenix, and is adjunct faculty
at Catholic University of America.
Mourine is deeply passionate about patient safety and family-centered care, two things
that are intimately linked with total patient/family care. As part of her extensive academic
background, Mourine studied caring as a practice behavior—that is, how care providers
themselves experience caring, and how patients receive it, and examining the ways in
which care is transmitted. Her passion for clinical excellence was vital to her leadership
and curriculum development for all nursing staff at Children's National Medical Center
in Washington, D.C., where Mourine was director for nursing staff development.
One of Mourine's great strengths, thanks to her blend of practical and academic
experience, is that she can translate to point-of-care staff what their leaders want, but also
explain to executives what the realities are on the ground. As she once explained to a CEO
who stressed the need to make people responsible, "Responsibility is in the job
description, but you have to create an environment in which people will say 'Yes, I accept
responsibility.' You can't hold people accountable for responsibility until they accept it."
She understands the clinical experience and relishes helping organizations achieve high
quality results even when constrained by operational realities.
Mourine lives in the Washington, D.C. area.
