Areas of Expertise
Susan describes her role at Creative Health Care Management as "a privilege and honor
to be part of this life-changing work." When she facilitates a Re-Igniting the Spirit of
Caring program with a group of multidisciplinary health care providers, she observes two
important outcomes: personal transformation and a deeper sense of community. People
are re-energized around the importance of their work and the impact they have on
patients and their families. "I'm reconnected to my purpose by getting other people
reconnected with theirs," she says.
Susan knows how important that commitment to caregiving is; she's a nurse with more
than 30 years of experience as a staff nurse, nurse practitioner, educator and health care
leader. She has a BSN and MS in public health from the University of Minnesota. And
while she's no longer providing direct care to patients herself, her goal is to re-ignite a
passion for caring in those who do. "Every person in this field is doing critical work.
You're either providing direct care, or you're supporting those who do. True
collaboration brings out the best in all of us and ultimately provides the best care for the
patient."
When she coaches new facilitators for CHCM's Re-Igniting the Spirit of Caring program,
her main goal is to support those new to this role by creating an environment that allows
participants to discover what matters most in caring for self, colleagues, patients and their
families. "When we engage in real conversation and learn from each other, we improve
everyone's experience with health care: patients, family, caregivers and support services,"
she says.
A former site surveyor for the ANCC (American Nurses Credentialing Center's
Commission on Accreditation), Susan also served on the Wisconsin State Nurses
Association Continuing Education Approval Program Committee. Susan is a member of
the American Nurses Association and Sigma Theta Tau; she lives outside of Eau Claire,
WI, with her husband.
